What is Love: Reflections of a Romantic

Just some thoughts that have been tumbling around in my head.

What is Love: Reflections of a Romantic

What is it, this thing we call love?
Is it just a physical reaction,
a mental condition,
or is it the intangible touch
of the breath of the soul?
Is it a hunger,
a thirst,
a desire,
or is it a heart pounding scare?,
Is it the sound of butterfly wings,
the touch of the sun,
the caress of a breeze?
Is it a laugh,
a tear in the eye,
an ache in the heart,
or is it the smell
of an afternoon shower,
the sound of a stream,
the song of the bird?
Is it a sword in a hand
protecting one’s back
or is it a scroll and a pen,
words written for ever?
Is it a friend met on the trail,
a smile and a wink,
the warm touch of a hand?
Is it rain on the face,
spray in a storm,
the sound of the surf,
or is it the sight of a delicate shell,
a trace in the sand,
the bright moon above?

True love is all this
and so very much more.
It’s longing and comfort,
a kiss just because—
The warmth of another,
the closeness you feel
as you sleep in your bed—
The saying Good Night,
the smile in the morning.

This then is love—
it encompasses all.
It’s the breath of our lives,
our reason for being.

It matters not who you love.
It matters only that you do.
