buerg brennen

Tonight every village will light its own bonfire with the huge cross atop and a necklace of fiery beads will be scattered across the landscape as we re-enact an ancient pagan ceremony to bid farewell to winter and welcome in the spring.

Cast off your snowy mantle, Gaia
come tripping o'er the land
and scatter springtime in your wake
for we have slumbered far too long
in winter's frosty grip

The first honking skeins of migrating geese flew over today - a sure sign that change is in the air

I envy such celebrations but I gather it is particularly cold right now. There will be snow over everything Carol. Here in Melbourne autumn has announced it's arrival and we are enjoying mellow days.

Thank you, Traveller, for sharing this ceremony with us. We need more ceremonies such as this to keep us in touch with that reality--to bring us together. Too often that which should be recognized is ignored and forgotten, and because of that we are all the poorer.
